Most root canal treatments are successful in restoring your oral health and function, and when paired with a good home care routine to maintain oral hygiene are able to keep your mouth free from further decay and infection. Occasionally, however, root canal treatment may not completely resolve the problem, and your previously treated tooth may become re-infected. When this occurs, our experienced dentists can perform a root canal retreatment to once again heal the tooth and restore your oral health. We invite you to call our office at 847-305-2442 to learn more about root canal retreatment in Arlington Heights, Illinois, and to schedule an appointment at Northwestern Dental Group.
Root canal retreatment may be necessary if your tooth did not heal correctly following your initial treatment or if a new infection develops in the tooth. This new or recurring infection may occur in a matter of months after your initial treatment or several years following it.
Your root canal retreatment procedure is nearly identical to the procedure for your initial root canal. Our dentists will reopen your tooth and remove the filling materials that were previously placed and any infected or damaged tissues. We take special care to examine the tooth for new infection and additional canals that were not treated previously. After the infection has been removed and the tooth cleaned, new filling material will be placed and the tooth will be sealed against further infection and decay. A new dental crown or other restoration will be placed to protect the tooth and complete your treatment.
