One of the most commonly provided and effective treatments for periodontal disease is scaling and root planing. Scaling and root planing is a type of deep dental cleaning which works to remove harmful plaque and bacteria from the tooth and root surfaces, enabling the healing process to more effectively work within the mouth. We welcome you to call Northwestern Dental Group at 847-305-2442 to make an appointment with our dentists and learn more about scaling and root planing in Arlington Heights, Illinois.

Scaling and root planing consists of two steps:

  1. The Scaling – during this portion of your treatment, our dentists removes plaque and tartar from your tooth surface.
  2. The Root Planing – during this step of treatment, we clean the roots of the teeth, removing harmful bacteria, plaque and toxins and smoothing the root surfaces to help prevent harmful bacteria from returning.

Most scaling and root planing treatments can be completed comfortably without the use of anesthetic or sedation dentistry. However, anesthetics are available to help you feel at ease during your treatment if you feel that you need them. Your scaling and root planing treatment may require several treatments to complete. We may also combine your treatment with other periodontal therapies, such as antibiotic treatment.

Following your scaling and root planing treatment, our dentists will evaluate your mouth and recommend a series of regular appointments at our office to help keep your mouth healthy and keep your periodontal disease under control.
